This large scale collaborative project was completed by Year 6 Art Extension students from Kingsway Christian College during their after school art programme.
The school's art teacher Simone Cassey approached us to help put together a mural proposal that would liven up a blank wall at the front of the school. With 16 students participating in the programme, the school wanted this art incursion to challenge and inspire the students, as well as teach them a new art skill.
We created the mosaic templates and supplied pre-cut tiles and materials. We taught the children how to use the hand cutter tools, as well as how to approach and interpret the mosaic pictures. We attended the school at periodic waypoints during the term to check on progress as well as help with more difficult pieces. By the end of the project the children were able to work independantly and were confident in their piecing and cutting.
Installation took place over a single week - and we managed to avoid most of the rainy weather!
The mosaic is a Creation Story theme, with the story beginning at the center and then expanding outward with each side reflecting each stage of the biblical story.
At the center of each wall the mosaic begins with the void, and then light and sun; developing into the creation of sea and sky, land and animals and then Adam and Eve. The extreme ends of the mural branch out into a 'tree of life'.
The mosaic elements are 'embossed' onto the wall, which allows the mosaic have additional elements added at a later stage.
